RANCHI: President APJ Abdul Kalam on Friday asked the legislators to play a more responsible and proactive role in the development of the society instead of fighting each other for making petty political gains.
In his address to legislators at Raj Bhavan, the President said the legislators have a duty towards the people which they represent. So despite all political differences, they should have only one aim to serve the people.
He said legislators should learn from southern states, which have developed on the basis of good politics in the region.
Parties in those states fight each other on some principles but they do not rake up issues just for political gains.
"Parties in Jharkhand should also adopt same principle and should fight on important issues which is crucial for the development of the society," he said.
The President said education for women and children should be the prime focus for all legislators because this is an area where a lot of work needs to be done.
"Besides this, the state should concentrate on the development of agriculture and industry especially the power industry as this has huge potential in Jharkhand," Kalam said.
